Following the spark from their collaboration with The Beths covering Postal Service's "Brand New Colony," Pickle Darling, the musical guise of Lukas Mayo from Christchurch, NZ, unveils a poignant rendition of Aimee Mann's "Deathly.” The emotionally charged track is transformed through Pickle Darling's wistful lens, infusing a bedroom pop lean into Mann's heart-wrenching songcraft.
"Deathly," a song off Aimee Mann's underdog album, Bachelor No. 2, or the Last Remains of the Dodo, is also the centerpiece of the 1999 film Magnolia by Paul Thomas Anderson. Anderson allegedly even rewrote an entire scene in the psych-drama to fit the song in seamlessly. The bruised and wary track embodies heartbreak, an exhaustive plea to a lover bound to hurt you, "Don't pick on me/When one act of kindness could be deathly."
It's not exactly a song you'd expect to have a whimsical reflection. Yet, Pickle Darling again proves their range by weaving the emotive original into their robust and pulsing drum machine world. By deconstructing "Deathly" down to its elements, Mayo discovered what's essential to the song, using that as a guide to fit their style. The result is an infectious, illuminating cover uniquely Pickle Darling and a stand-alone track for the New Zealand multi-instrumentalist.
